• Constipation

    Constipation is one of the most common digestive complaints in the world. In general, if you do not have a bowel movement after every meal you are considered to be constipated. Most people associate the term constipation with feeling the need to have a bowel movement and not being able to do so.

    Everyone is different. For some people the normal frequency of their bowel movements range from once or more a day to three times a week. Some have even longer periods without a bowel movement.

    The problem with constipation, other than the discomfort it brings, is that your body is basically withholding toxins that it needs to get rid of and, if a long period of time follows without being able to get rid of these toxins, they will build up in your digestive system and could find their way back into your blood stream causing you all sorts of health problems from indigestion to more serious issues such as colon cancer.

    Constipation can make you feel bloated and very uncomfortable. If you find yourself straining to have a bowel movement you may eventually develop hemorrhoids as well.

    While constipation is common among everyone those who seem to suffer with it the most are the elderly (over 65 years old) and women. Pregnant women often experience constipation as well. People who have had major surgeries (including C-Sections) often suffer with constipation afterward. Some medications also cause constipation.

    Let’s look at some natural remedies for constipation;

    1. Liquids – Water intake is crucial here as it helps the body to flush out toxins. Fluids make stools softer and easier to eliminate from your body. Drinks that can cause dehydration such as alcohol and caffeinated drinks should be avoided.

    2. Laxatives – Some people become overly dependent on laxatives. They are meant for short term use only so if you find that you are relying on stimulant laxatives for everyday use then you should consider other aspects of your lifestyle and make changes there instead. Here are some herbal laxatives you can use;
    a) Senna , b) Cascara Sagrada, c) Aloe, d) Rhubarb or e) Buckthorn These are usually taken in the form of a tea.

    3. Fiber – Fiber is essential to keep your digestive system working smoothly. This is why Metamucil has achieved popularity. However, you can get this from your diet by eating foods that are high in insoluble fiber such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Flax seeds are an excellent source of fiber and can be added to a meal after it is cooked. Prunes and prune juice are effective in helping to relieve constipation. Add fiber slowly into your diet to prevent gas and bloating. Be sure to drink a lot of water as too much fiber can CAUSE constipation so you must also increase your fluid intake when increasing your fiber intake.

    4. Magnesium – Magnesium helps your intestinal muscles to function properly so when you are constipated magnesium can help to get those muscles working properly again.

    5. Exercise – exercise helps your body to function normally including having regular bowel movements.

    6. Resisting the Urge – Be sure to go to the bathroom and do not resist that urge to have a bowel movement as this just makes matters worse.

    7. Probiotics – probiotics are live bacteria that exist in your intestines. They work to counteract the bad bacteria that sometimes show up in your digestive system. They help to boost your immune function as well.
