Here we will look at what causes diaper rash and simple yet effective ways to treat it so that your baby can rest comfortably again.

    So what causes diaper rash?

    1. Moisture in the diaper from urine
    2. Bacteria in the diaper from feces
    3. Reaction to chemicals in baby wipes
    4. Diapers that are too tight and do not allow your baby’s skin to “breathe”
    5. If you use cloth diapers, your baby’s skin may be irritated by the laundry detergent you use to wash his/her diapers.
    6. Antibiotics – whether you are taking them while breastfeeding your baby or if your baby is on antibiotics.

    So what are the best ways to prevent or treat diaper rash?

    The key to preventing diaper rash is to keep your baby’s diaper area clean, cool and dry.

    1. Change your baby’s diaper as often as possible

    2. Let your baby go without a diaper for some time each day

    3. Apply breast milk to the diaper area once a rash has developed.

    4. Switch to cloth diapers if you are using the disposable kind

    5. Switch to warm water with a very mild soap to clean baby’s diaper area if you suspect that the rash is a result of a reaction to the baby wipes.

    6. Avoid scented baby wipes or those that contain alcohol

    7. Don’t use plastic pants over your baby’s diaper as this traps moisture.

    9. Use creams with zinc oxide in them such as Desitin

    10. Balmex is another excellent cream for diaper rash.

    11. Vaseline could also be used to protect your baby’s diaper area from moisture.

    12. Pat your baby dry rather than rubbing the towel in this area.

    Many parents use powder in their baby’s diaper area but this is not recommended as powder can get into your baby’s lungs and cause other problems.

    If after trying some of the above remedies and a few days have passed and you do not see any improvement, I highly suggest that you check with your doctor as perhaps there is something else causing this problem.
