• Hot Flashes

    Hot flashes are probably one of the first early menopause symptoms that will let you know for sure that you have entered menopause. They are one of the menopausal symptoms that women complain about the most because they are truly awful.

    A hot flash is described as a sudden body warming, flushing and sweating. It feels like a surge of extreme heat throughout your body over which you have absolutely no control. The time they last for varies between women as well as the frequency of their occurrence.

    They are very uncomfortable and can make you feel like you want to strip all of your clothes off, even in the peak of winter. You may often end up after a hot flash drenched in sweat. Then once this sweat dries on your skin you may experience chills.

    It is important to check with your doctor when you start to experience hot flashes, especially if you believe that you are too young to be starting menopause as there are some other potential causes for hot flashes that are medically dangerous such as hyperthyroidism and some types of cancer.

    So while hot flashes are one of the early menopause symptoms, they could also be a sign of something more serious. It is sensible to be sure don’t you think?

    What actually causes hot flashes?

    There are many theories about what causes hot flashes but the most commonly accepted theory is that it is the reduction of estrogen in a woman’s body associated with menopause that causes them. This is not a bullet-proof theory however, as studies have shown both that some women taking estrogen supplements see a reduction in hot flashes, but also that some women only taking a placebo see a reduction as well.

    The theory is also challenged by the fact that many menopausal and post-menopausal women with reduced estrogen levels do not experience hot flashes at all.

    It seems that hot flashes are affected by a lot of factors including our thoughts, emotions and expectations as well as diet and lifestyle.

    There are known foods that bring on hot flashes as well so these should be avoided;

    1. Spicy food
    2. Sugar
    3. Caffeine
    4. Alcohol
    5. Chocolate and others

    Some environmental & emotional triggers for hot flashes include;

    1. Stress
    2. Sleep Deprivation
    3. Certain medications
    4. Hot tubs and saunas
    5. Tobacco
    6. Marijuana
    7. Anger
    8. Hot room and probably others as well.

    Did you know that men can also experience hot flashes? That might come as a surprise to many but it’s true. It happens when they have a drop in testosterone levels. Which brings me now to looking at some of the natural remedies for dealing with early menopause symptoms such as hot flashes.

    Natural healing remedies for early menopause symptoms such as hot flashes;

    1. Testosterone cream – I once had an encounter with a nurse and a cashier where the cashier was experiencing a hot flash while the nurse in front of me was trying to check out. The nurse suggested to the cashier that she get herself some testosterone cream and apply it to reduce her hot flashes. Based on the fact that men can also experience hot flashes when their testosterone levels drop it makes sense that this could be a possible solution to help women with this issue also.
