• Mononucleosis aka Mono

    Mono or Infectious mononucleosis, as it is also known, is a contagious viral illness caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is also known as the “Kissing Disease” as some believe it can be transmitted by kissing. It spreads by person-to-person contact and saliva is known to be the primary medium of transmitting the disease.

    It is also known as glandular fever, Filatov’s disease and Pfeiffer’s disease.

    Mononucleosis
    is an infectious disease that affects the liver, respiratory system and lymphatic system. Teenagers and young adults are susceptible to mononucleosis and the symptoms generally last for several weeks.

    Mononucleosis refers to an increase in one type of white blood cells (lymphocytes) in the bloodstream relative to the other blood components as a result of the EBV infection.

    Here are some common symptoms of Mononucleosis; (Note that you may not experience all of these symptoms)

    1. Loss of appetite
    2. Sore throat(severe), swollen tonsils or swollen lymph glands (in neck and armpits)
    3. Drowsiness
    4. Hives
    5. Fever and fatigue ( fever as high as 102 to 104 degrees)
    6. Headache
    7. Chills
    8. Enlarged Liver
    9. Sensitivity to light
    10. Nausea
    11. Enlarged Spleen which causes pain in the upper left abdomen
    12. Jaundice (yellow coloration of the skin and the whites of the eyes)
    13. Reddened throat and tonsils
    14. Neck stiffness
    15. Chest pain
    16. Cough
    17. Shortness of breath
    18. Muscle soreness or joint pain
    19. Rash
    20. Irregular or rapid heartbeat
    21. Weight Loss
    22. Malaise (or generally just not feeling well)

    What causes Mono?

    Direct contact with saliva that is infected with the virus is the main cause. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a part of the herpes family of DNA viruses. EBV is spread by contact with virus infected saliva. You can come in contact with this virus through: sneezing, coughing, kissing or sharing saliva infected utensils, lips gloss, straws etc. Infection through sexual intercourse is also a possibility.
