• OCD – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

My first experience with OCD was from watching the movie with Jack Nicholson “As Good As It Gets”. It was an enjoyable movie for many reasons but I sure would hate to be a “real” person dealing with the issues that his character had to deal with. He had OCD in this movie and it was a very funny movie. I totally understand, however, that if you have to cope with OCD yourself, it would not be a laughing matter at all.

Every now and again I double check myself, as in making sure I unplugged something, or turned off the oven, or locked my car as pretty common examples. Most often I find that I, in fact, had done the task but seem to have had a lapse of memory. People suffering with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) find that these thoughts and behaviors are so excessive that they actually interfere with their daily life. For them, it is a daily occurrence, not an infrequent one.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by uncontrollable, unwanted thoughts and repetitive, ritualized behaviors you feel you must perform. If you are suffering with OCD, you probably even realize that your obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors are irrational , yet you feel unable to resist them and break free of this behavior pattern.

So how do I know if I or a loved one am suffering with OCD? What are the symptoms of OCD ?

    1. Fear of contamination – OCD sufferers commonly seem to have a paranoia about being infected with dirt or germs, as well as contaminating others

    2. Excessive double-checking of things – such as locks, appliances, and switches

    3. Fear of causing harm to yourself or others

    4. Repeatedly checking in on loved ones to make sure they’re safe

    5. Excessive focus on religious or moral ideas

    6. Doing senseless things to reduce anxiety – such as counting, tapping, or repeating certain words

    7. Fear of losing or not having things you might need – you might have seen news stories on TV where people cannot even move around in their homes because of the amount of “stuff” they have accumulated. They cannot bring themselves to throw away or give away any of it for fear they may one day need it.

    8. Spending an excessive amount of time washing or cleaning yourself or items around you.

    9. Fixation about order and organization – the conviction that everything must be set up “just right.”

    10. Praying excessively – or practicing rituals due to religious fear

    11. In some cases the person with OCD may have repetitive thoughts of uncomfortable sexual urges or the desire to commit a violent act.

There are more symptoms that accompany this disorder, but just from the list above I think you can get the point that the behavior of someone with OCD is affected by the emotion of fear and paranoia in some cases.

So what is the best obsessive compulsive disorder treatment and is there a OCD cure?

OCD is strongly associated with imbalances in brain chemistry and there are a number of herbal remedies that have been shown to be effective in restoring chemical balance and neurological health in the brain. In addition, because anxiety levels contribute significantly to OCD symptoms, herbal and homeopathic remedies that help to reduce anxiety levels may also be of benefit in the treatment of OCD.

    1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Cognitive behavioral therapy’s function is to interfere with and change existing patterns of compulsive behavior and obsessive thoughts. Your therapist will work with you to weaken negative beliefs that lead to the compulsive, usually self-destructive, behavior.

    2. The Linden Method – Drug Free – Medically & Psychologist Endorsed, 100% Guaranteed Used by Government Health Services, Psychologists & Doctors around the World. Over 96% Success Rate

    3. Education – the more the person suffering with OCD knows about this condition the better able they are to self-help themselves to treating the disorder.

    4. Practice relaxation techniques – Meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and other stress relief techniques may help reduce the symptoms of anxiety brought on by OCD.

    5. Staying close to family and friends – Obsessions and compulsions can consume your life to the point where you isolate yourself socially. This only serves to make your OCD worse. Keep your network of friends and family close for support.

    6. OCD Support Groups – you might think this is following along the lines of “misery loves company” but it can be really helpful sharing with others what you are dealing with as well as learning what they are dealing with.
