• Osteoporosis

    We’re going to look at the symptoms of osteoporosis so that you can recognize them in yourself or your loved ones and take appropriate action. We will also look at treatment for osteoporosis, including Vitamin D osteoporosis treatment.

    Osteoporosis is a condition that causes weakening of the bones in your body. Also known as “brittle bone disease”, osteoporosis increases your chance of sustaining a broken bone. Many of the elderly suffer broken hip bones as a result of osteoporosis combined with a fall. Typical places for osteoporosis injuries other than the hip are the wrist and the spine. Despite this, almost any skeletal bone area is susceptible to osteoporosis-related fracture.

    While osteoporosis occurs in men and pre-menopausal women, this condition is predominant among postmenopausal women.

    Were you aware that our bones are constantly changing? That old bone is taken away and new bone replaces the old? Well Osteoporosis occurs when the pace of new bone formation lags in pace with the removal of old bone tissue.

    Your doctor can do a bone density test to determine the condition of your bones as well as the likelihood of you developing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis progresses slowly and silently and can go unnoticed for years.

    So what are the symptoms of osteoporosis?

    1. Stooped posture
    2. Limited mobility
    3. Sharp pain in the back, ribs, waist or hips
    4. Sudden onset of back pain in the middle to lower back with no particular reason
    5. Fracture in the thigh bone, hipbone or lower arm bone above the wrist.
    6. Height loss – due to collapsing or fractured vertebrae

    Here are some things that make you more susceptible to getting osteoporosis;

    1. Female (although osteoporosis also occurs in men)
    2. Already gone through menopause
    3. Hardly exercise or none at all
    4. Caucasian
    5. Over age 50
    6. Lack of Calcium and/or Vitamin D in your diet
    7. Suffered with hormonal imbalances
    8. Have a history of bone fractures
    9. Osteoporosis runs in your family
    10. Smoking
    11. Caffeine
    12. Alcohol consumption

    In addition, here are some other contributing factors to getting osteoporosis;

    - Having a small body frame
    - Eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia
    - Low level of testosterone in men
    - Excessive intake of soda
    - Medications like diuretics, cholesterol lowering drugs, blood thinners and corticosteroids
    - Hysterectomy with complete removal of the ovaries
    - Crohn’s disease and celiac disease and other gastrointestinal disorders
    - Severe depression
    - Stress

    So let’s now look at treatment for osteoporosis;

    1. Exercise – exercise benefits both your muscles and your bones so getting regular exercise is highly recommended. Even walking would be adequate so try to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise daily.

    2.Vitamin D osteoporosis treatment – Vitamin D can be got from foods in your diet such as egg yolks, liver and saltwater fish. You also get Vitamin D from exposure to sunlight so be sure to get some natural vitamin d every day you have a chance to do so. Vitamin D also helps your body’s absorption of calcium which is also required in the treatment of osteoporosis.

    3. Calcium – 1,000-1,500mg per day is the recommended dosage but this depends on how old you are, your overall health and your diet. You will find calcium in your diet in yogurts, salmon and oysters, green vegetables and yogurt for a few examples.

    4. Vitamin K – you can also get this in your diet from sources such as lettuce, spinach, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and collard greens. Basically the green leafy vegetables are full of vitamin k. Vitamin K activates a protein found in bones, call osteocalcin, which holds calcium molecules in place.

    5. Boron – Foods high in boron (a mineral that helps the body hold calcium) are beneficial for those affected by osteoporosis. Boron is found in apples, pears, grapes and other fruit, as well as in legumes, nuts and honey.

    6. Limit alcohol consumption

    7. Limit caffeine intake or stop it completely

    8. Stop Smoking (here are some methods to help with this)
