• Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

    It seems to me that restless leg syndrome came on the scene just recently so I wonder if it has always been around, namelessly, or if it is a result of the way we are living and actually is a new condition that affects us.

    So what is restless leg syndrome exactly? It is an uncontrollable urge to move your legs. Also known as RLS, restless leg syndrome is a neurological condition that affects millions of Americans.

    RLS usually occurs when a person is lying in their bed but can also occur after prolonged periods of sitting. Restless leg syndrome can be very debilitating as it can affect sleep and lead to anxiety and depression.

    Let’s look at some restless leg syndrome symptoms; These symptoms occur in the lower legs.

    1. Burning
    2. Aching
    3. Tingling
    4. Itching or
    5. Tugging
    6. Insomnia – comes from lack of sleep caused by restless leg syndrome

    So what causes restless leg syndrome?

    1. Excessive sitting
    2. Too much caffeine
    3. Dehydration
    4. Iron deficiency
    5. Magnesium deficiency
    6. Lack of exercise
    7. Kidney failure
    8. Diseases like Diabetes and Parkinson’s Disease
    9. Obesity
    10. Excessive abdominal fat
    11. Abnormalities in levels of the brain chemical dopamine may be linked to restless leg syndrome also.

    So now let’s focus on treatment for restless leg syndrome; (RLS treatment)

    1. Limit Caffeine intake
    2. Drink more water to prevent dehydration
    3. Exercise
    4. Reduce time spent sitting. Get up every once in a while if you are required to sit for work. Do some stretching or go for a brief walk.
    5. Manage stress using relaxation techniques, exercise, aromatherapy or whatever works for you.
    6. Limit alcohol
    7. Stop Smoking
    8. Diet – include bananas and prunes
    9. Warm bath before bedtime
    10. Hot and cold therapy to the affected areas.
    11. Massage therapy
    12. Acupuncture
    13. Supplementation of iron and magnesium
    14. Folic Acid
    15. Supplement with a combination of Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc
    16. Tonic Water
